GREGORY PECK AWARD
Last night at the Dingle Film Festival, the Gregory Peck Award for excellence in the art of film was presented to Jim Sheridan by Anthony Peck.

Good evening... I am so honored to be here and presenting this award in my father’s name to one of our greatest directors, to a splendid, Irish artist, Jim Sheridan.
Jim’s awards and nominations are too numerous to list but I’ll give you just a taste: Jim and his films have been nominated for 28 major awards including Academy Awards, the David di Donatello Award, BAFTA Awards, Berlin Film Festival Awards, British Independent Awards, Critics Choice, European Film, Golden Globes, Montreal Film Festival, Writer’s Guild Awards, the list goes on. Jim has won the National Board of Review Award, the David di Donatello, the Golden Berlin Bear, the Independent Spirit Award, the Goya Award, Best Film at the Montreal Film Festival, and many more. And, Jim has been nominated in his capacities as a writer, a producer and as a director. Jim is a storyteller.
Jim’s movies include My Left Foot, The Field, In the Name of the Father, Into the West, The Boxer, In America, Agnes Brown, Get Rich or Die Tryin’ and Some Mother’s Son. Many of these films he has made with his great collaborators, Noel Pearson and Daniel Day Lewis. Jim has also worked in collaboration with his three daughters, Kirsten and Naomi and Tess, most notably on the autobiographical film, In America.
When my father saw My Left Foot in 1989, he sought out Jim Sheridan. Greg sensed a kindred spirit, an Irishman telling stories about the human condition, about what it means to be Irish, at home and abroad; what it means to struggle, to persevere, to overcome… To find the truth that resonates from a personal story and affects audiences around the world… To be be unafraid of pain, to find the humor in the toughest of times. He invited Jim and Noel Pearson to his home. They were in Los Angeles during the Academy Awards that year and it was a whirlwind for them. My Left Foot earned six nominations including Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Picture and it won two Academy Awards, for Best Actor and Best Actress. I can’t speak for Jim on what it was like to get a call from my father. Maybe he’ll tell you. But I can tell you that for my father, meeting Jim was meeting a brother, a fellow Irishman with a love of story telling, with a deep humanity that influenced all of his work and a fellow artist with whom he could share experience. This was the beginning of a long friendship, a deep and abiding respect and affection between them that lasted until my father passed. Whenever Jim was in Los Angeles, Jim and Fran would visit, and when my parents came to Ireland, they visited the Sheridans; the last time in 1999 when my father brought Martin Scorcese over to give a seminar to the film students at University College, Dublin. Jim gave a lunch at his home in Dublin, gathering a group of Irish filmmakers, Noel Pearson and Terry George were there, my father, Marty Scorcese, my sister, Cecilia and others. Cecilia told me that our father was utterly happy and at home in the midst of his fellow Irish artists and storytellers that day.
When my father received the American Film Institute's Lifetime Achievement Award, part of his remarks reflected his personal and artistic code. He said:
"I would like to hear some talk about elevating the quality of film and television. Entertainment, in the words of T.S. Elliot, “that enlarges the sympathies, that stimulates the mind and spirit, that warms the heart and punctures the balloons of hypocrisy, greed and sham”. Greg continued: "Making millions is not the whole ball game, fellas. Pride of workmanship is worth more, artistry is worth more. The human imagination is a priceless resource. The public is ready for the best you can give them."
Jim, my father could have been talking about your films. To him, your movies were the ideal he had in mind for what films can be and must be. You are an uncompromising filmmaker, an actor's director, and Greg would be so honored that you are receiving this award in his name. He loved the films that you made. On behalf of my mother Veronique, my sister Cecilia, and the whole Peck family, our most heartfelt congratulations.
Anthony Peck
