We are bringing a little bit of Dingle to Cannes this year hoping to experience some great films and have generally a good time. We’ll be at The IFB party on Saturday evening in Long Beach and we will hopefully get to catch Harold Lloyd in SAFETY LAST! de Fred C. Newmeyer, Sam Taylor (1923) at Cinéma De La Plage. There are some other great classics playing on the beach also this year including; THE GENERAL de Buster Keaton, Clyde Bruckman (1926) Le Mécano de la General and an ideal venue for JAWS de Steven Spielberg (1975) Les Dents de la mer. Spielberg heads up the jury this year.

We are also hoping to catch, INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS d’Ethan Coen, Joel Coen, BORGMAN d’Alex van Warmerdam, AS I LAY DYING de James Franco, BEHIND THE CANDELABRA de Steven Soderbergh, some great classics being remastered also; FEDORA REMASTERED de Billy Wilder and THE LAST DETAIL de Hal Ashby.

So looking forward to The Last Days on Mars, Ruairí Robinson‘s first feature. The film is being screened as part of this year’s Director’s Fortnight. You might remember Ruairí’s first short film Fifty Per Cent Grey which was nominated for an oscar.

Some great discussions taking place in the UK pavilion including; A Story of Children & Film and Digital Distribution

The Irish Film Pavilion is located in the same place as usual and hopefully we may meet some of you there.

The Festival was declared open by Leonardo DiCaprio and Amitabh Bachchan last night and the Ceremony continued with the screening Out of Competition of Baz Luhrmann’s The Great

Gatsby, with the key members of the movie crew in attendance. There was a song from the film The Color Purple by Steven Spielberg performed by Emeli Sandé. So all off and running, bring your shades and good spirits and lets see what great new films are in store for us in the coming 12 months.

The 7th Dingle International Film Festival has once again demonstrated that locally conceived projects can prove to be the most resilient. This inclusive boutique festival has seen ticket sales double this year as many local and international film industry figures migrated to Corca Dhuibhne for the St. Patrick’s weekend.

I’ve fallen hopelessly in love with the Dingle Film Festival, the people, and the town. As someone who came from so far, I immediately felt at home. I blame you! These events acquire their own personality and clearly your excitement, curiosity, warmth and artistic sense fuels this festival’s persona. Daphne Pollon, LA Writer

I personally could not be happier with how things went this year: our numbers doubled, our guests were more than happy and our audiences had only positive feedback in relation to the selected festival programme of events and screenings.

The festival made a strong impression on the town long before things kicked off with signage and artwork on most buildings. West Kerry Live produced a special film edition of their magazine and TG4 IMEALL had already done a preview on the festival. RTE Elev8 had run our ‘Design a Cartoon Character’ competition with The Skelligs Hotel, Family Festival Passes, A trip to Fungi and Ocean World and an appearance on ROY being the prize.

I want to thank you for an amazing weekend! We had a wonderful time and really appreciate all the help you gave in the build up and over the course of the weekend. I really hope we managed to capture the spirit of the festival and some of its many highlights in our programme. Le meas agus gach dea-ghuí. Tristan Rosenstock, Presenter, IMEALL

IMEALL arrived in the town on Friday and began to document the entire weekend for a IMEALL TV special on the festival which was broadcast on March 28th (available to see on our festival website).

ART WILL SAVE THE WORLD opened the first day and was followed by an industry event sponsored by The Irish Film Board/Bord Scannán Na hÉireann, DOCUMENTARY: THE NEXT STEP UP. Chaired by Sé Merry Doyle and with Keith Walsh, Jill Beardsworth, Niall McCann and Mark McLoughlin – directors screening their features at the festival, it was a most informative session. Two shorts programmes followed with audience voting for our first Audience Choice Award sponsored by IMEALL.

Thank you so much for inviting us to your festival and for the hospitality you afforded us. It was a thoroughly enjoyable weekend from a professional and personal point of view and will live long in the memory. So often in doing this work it can feel like an ‘industry’ or a ‘business’ when at it’s core it’s about stories, the experience of being human and the expression of that experience. It was nice to touch that again. You have a great thing down there and great people working with you. Long may it continue and grow. Keith Walsh, Director

Local film-maker Mark McLoughlin presented his moving and harrowing work ‘Blood Rising’ to a packed Phoenix Cinema on opening night. The opening reception was sponsored by Dingle Distillery and the film was followed by a sincere and heartfelt Q&A, with both Mark and artist Brian McGuire. O’Sullivans Courthouse Pub was the festival club with the best in traditional music and with standing room only, it was packed to the rafters. Seen in the crowd were many filmmakers, festival sponsors and funders.

Soho House was delighted for our House Shorts programme to be invited to be a part of this year’s intelligent and varied Dingle IFF programme – a real accolade and absolute pleasure for us and our House Shorts 2012 winner James Kibbey. Mandy Kean, Soho House

The first annual ANIMATION DINGLE event with animators many of whom work for companies whose output has earned Oscar nominations queued up outside St. James’ Church an hour before the doors opened. One animator came all the way from Abu Dabi. This gathering of practitioners and enthusiasts was set off by the presence of the CEO’s of the five top Irish companies in the sector. Chief among them was John Rice of JAM Media. John, myself and Siobhán O Donoghue of Media Desk, Ireland initiated this innovative event back at last year’s festival. The event was packed out all day with a wonderful atmosphere. A showcase of animation for pre-school and 7-11 year olds was followed by a panel discussion with each of the top animators, which was filmed by Fás TV Production Unit and will be available on our website.

We had a brilliant time in Dingle, was actually the first time I was ever there. It’s a great festival, friendly, great fun, great films so will definitely return. Will also be sure to recommend it to other film makers that I meet on the festival circuit! Damien O Connor, Animator

The highlight of the animation day was the presentation of the ‘Murakami’ award for achievement in animation. The award, an original design and piece by local Jeweller Brian de Staic, went, in this its inaugural year, to its namesake, Jimmy T. Murakami. The Dublin-based celebrity’s career stretches back to the mid-1960s and the Japanese-American director, one-time Oscar nominee and animation genius was visibly pleased to receive the award and stated afterwards, ’I have been to hundreds of film festivals all over the globe for what seem to be the last hundred years and in my opinion the Dingle Film Festival is the best among them all’.

Thanks for a wonderful Festival. You win first prize for inaugurating ‘The Jimmy Murakami Award’. The great animator of ‘Snowman’ and ‘When the Wind Blows’ was emotionally blown away! Sé Merry Doyle

We had a really unforgettable time in Dingle. We all agreed that the single best thing about the festival experience for us was how welcoming, friendly and encouraging you all were to Sean. John. (Father of the winner of our kid’s Cartoon Competition)

In amongst the rock music documentaries and workshops, films based on literature, short films galore and receptions, there were some spectacular occasions. On Sunday my own film ‘Yellow Man, Grey Man’, a celebration of the work of Kerry artist Pauline Bewick was premièred in The Phoenix Cinema to an appreciative full house. An added dimension to the night was provided by Senator David Norris who conducted an interview with the artist and joined with her in duet to give a rendering of Bessie Smith’s ‘Nobody Loves You When You’re Down and Out’ marking Bewick’s once mini-career as a singer. The reception in Benner’s Hotel before the film was delightful with Rose Lawless performing live cabaret to a full house.

Just a note to say how very much I enjoyed the film festival. It is a stunning festival and should certainly be given a wider audience through either RTE or BBC. With congratulations and best wishes.
 David Norris, Senator

Uniquely this year we found ourselves with a televised public interview with Sophie Fiennes and a screening of a Ken Loach film both in The Dingle Distillery, our brand new venue. Watch this space; this was very cool stuff indeed with the ‘Gin Bar’ open for the screening and its owner Oliver Hughes giving festival goers a private tour of the distillery before each event. Dingle Distillery were providing festival goers with free ‘Dingle Donkeys’ and G&T’s at a number of our events.

Just to say it was a real pleasure to be back in Dingle. We had a great time, and everyone was delightful. Its a gem of a festival. Sophie Fiennes, Director

The ticket that I predict will become the hardest to get, was another knock out this year. St. Patrick’s Morning at 8am, we presented the premiere screening of Brenda Ní Shúilleabháin’s Fearaibh Fionntrá and, after last years’ success, we all again retired to John Benny Moriarty’s for a full Irish Breakfast!

I hope you are basking in the warm (post Guinness) fuzz of a fab festival. I want you to know that everything you predicted – of what a fun and friendly time I would have – was exceeded. Many superb films and shorts I got to see, to meet an amazing array of wonderful people – both locals and festival visitors. It is no surprise to me that people come back year after year…much love Dick Carruthers, Director/Producer

Dick Carruthers who directed the last two Rolling Stones world tours presented his film Led Zeppelin: Celebration Day to a packed St. James’ Church and the following day was chaired by Producer Michael Ryan in what can only described as a genius talk on aspects of filming live events, during which Dick covered his work with Oasis, The Stones and Beyonce.

Thank you so much for a great festival and for assembling a terrific group of people and films. The spirit and the atmosphere reminded me of the first ever Sundance Film Festival, a beautiful setting, full of like minded people all willing to share their knowledge and experience. So, from now on, you are the Robert Redford of the West Coast of Ireland! Michael Ryan, Producer

Michael Ryan, (who has produced films such as The English Patient and The General) also chaired a discussion with Jonathan Clyde, head of Apple Corps and Anthony Wall, head of BBC Arena, and director Francis Hanly to an enthusiastic house: the subject matter, The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour which had a particular focus this year.

The festival was a wonderful experience and I’ll be back again for sure so here’s to the next time. Jonathan Clyde, Apple Corps

The festival screened 61 short films this year and most of the films were represented. On Saturday morning at the 10.30am screening of the 11 shorts screened, 9 of the directors were in the audience. Soho House supported the winner of their shorts completion being in Dingle for the festival, James Kibbey presented his film House Cocktail and James Fisher also turned up to present his film Moment of Clarity. Mandy Kean of Soho House introduced the screening.

Deirdre Mullins’ Going The Distance and Luke McManus’ Bás Arto Leary came joint first for the Imeall audience choice award. Bás Arto Leary screened as part of our full Irish language programme in An Lab, which also had a full house.

Thanks for a terrific weekend, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and it was a real pleasure to be in Dingle for a couple of days. Luke McManus, Director

Físín winner 2012 Paul Webster presented his film Stuama in An Lab and the 2013 live Físín pitches took place in there also with Denis Buckley announced as the winner on the closing night screening in the Phoenix.

Just wanted to express my thanks to you and the festival committee for the marvellous experience of being at the Dingle Film Festival and of course the privilege of being chosen as winner of this year’s Físín. Denis Buckley, Físín winner 2013

Andrew Duggan presented the 10th anniversary of Milk + Honey in Riasc Creamery, Ballyferriter. There was also a fly on the wall documentary on the project shot by myself back in 2002 presented in Bric’s Pub.

The festival prides itself in bringing people together in local settings and exploring media arts. On Sunday afternoon, post-St. Patrick’s parade, situation comedy writers from LA, Marc Flanagan and Daphne Pollen, sat down in the lounge at the peerless Emlagh House and shared tea and scones and the tricks of their trade.

The nightly festival clubs based at local bars were packed with local folk, film folk and folk who just enjoy tales of the movies. Dingle Bay was hoping on Saturday night to the Funk & Soul sounds of DJ Rob.

There were so many more highlights including the visit of Mr. Irakli Koplatadze, Charge d’Affaires of Georgia to present the winners of the first ever Irish Georgian Film Festival, the talk around films such as My Father and The Man in Black, Lore, Easy Money, The Paper Boy, Beyond The Hills, Jimmy Murakami introducing his film When The Wind Blows the full houses and wonderful enthusiasm shown for Dreamtime Revisited and Return To The Sea and how beautiful A Dolphin’s Gift looked after all these years on the screen.

Huge thanks for a terrific weekend – my friends who joined me now want to make Paddy’s Day in Dingle an annual event! It was a really lovely time. Katie Holly, Producer

Meanwhile there was constant coming and going at festival headquarters, the Dingle Bay Hotel as people bought their tickets and met up with old friends. This local festival with an international profile finished the weekend off on Monday with a Dingle Day dedicated to locally associated films and paid particular homage to the late Paidi Ó Sé. This last was an exclusive festival production drawing material made available from RTE and footage contributed by local documentary film maker Brenda Ní Shúilleabháin. Members of the Ó Sé family were present on the night and Paidi’s brother said a few words prior to the screening. The festival party concluded in John Benny Moriarty’s with some great music including Eilís Kennedy and an open mic session.

All of this was made possible by a strong team of 18 volunteers over the weekend, our board throughout the year, our funders, our sponsors and the local support from both businesses and audience, my thanks to each of them.

What a wonderful weekend Maurice…starting with Blood Rising on Friday evening and culminating with “Celebration Day” last night and Connor’s Pass this morning! Magic. Good on you Mate. Still buzzing. Dr.Johnny Walker, Health Founders

Press included; RTE, TG4, Radio Kerry, Spin South West, Radio Na Gaeltachta, Radio 1, Sunday Times, Irish Times, Sunday Independent, Sunday World, Irish Independent, Irish Examiner, Kerryman, Kerry’s Eye, West Kerry Live, Outlook Tralee, Outlook Killarney, IFTN.ie, Entertainment.ie.

Congratulations to Deirdre Mullins (Going The Distance) and to Luke McManus(Bas Arto Leary) for winning joint first place for our IMEALL Audience Choice Award

The 7th Dingle International Film Festival has once again demonstrated that locally-conceived projects can prove to be the most resilient. Maurice Galway director of this inclusive boutique festival has seen ticket sales increase as many local and international film industry figures migrated to Corca Dhuibhne for the St. Patrick’s weekend. Last Saturday’s first annual Animation Dingle event animators many of whom work for companies whose output has earned Oscar nominations queued up outside St. James Church an hour before the doors opened. This gathering of practitioners and enthusiasts was set off by the presence of the CEO’s of the five top Irish companies in the sector. Chief among them was John Rice of Jam Media. Rice who with Galway and Media Desk, Ireland initiated this innovative event is himself a Kerry native being originally form Abbeydorney

The highlight of the day was the presentation of the ‘Jimmy Murakami’ award for achievement in animation. The silverware went this year to a Dublin-based celebrity the beginnings of whose career stretches back to the mid-1960s namely Jimmy Murakami for whom the award is named.
The Dingle International Film Festival, the innovative boutique festival which is open to everyone has taken the lead again. In a joint initiative with Irish animation company ‘Jam Media’ it is set to host ‘Animation Dingle’ a one-day gathering of industry professionals. The symposium will take place in the town’s St. James Church on Saturday 16th March, the second day of the four day festival. For the first time ever the senior figures running the top five companies in the sector will gather to celebrate their craft and discuss issues of mutual interest.
There is undoubtedly has been much to celebrate in recent years for Irish cartoon creators. Brown Bag films which will be represented at the Dingle event has earned Oscar nominations for Give Up Yer Auld Sins (2002), Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty (2010) and Bafta and Emmy nominations for their hugely popular TV series, The Octonauts (2011). JAM Media, led by CEO Kerryman John Rice, itself won a BAFTA award last year for its animation/live action programme ‘Roy’. In addition it scooped up the Producer of the Year award at the Cartoon Forum’s event in Toulouse, France.
This key event will discuss and debate issue relevant to the practitioners in the sector. However interested viewers and cartoon enthusiasts are welcome to attend. There are in fact two childrens’ animation showcases being screened displaying work suitable for pre-primary and post-primary children. In addition the winner of the best short animation award at Sundance Film Festival will be on show.
The Dingle International Film Festival has a reputation for attracting industry names who come to the event year after year. Members of Gregory Peck’s family, who have cousins in the town have been frequent visitors as has celebrated documentary film-maker Sé Merry Doyle. This recorder of cultural life in Ireland and beyond has a particular task to perform at Animation Dingle. The ‘Jimmy Murakami Award’ for achievement in the practice of animation is to be presented for the first time. Fittingly it will be given to past Oscar nominee and director and animator of Raymond Biggs’s novels ‘The Snowman’ and ‘When the Wind Blows’, Jimmy Murakami. The Dublin-based Japanese-American has had an illustrious career and in Doyle agreeing to hand over the award a certain symmetry is accomplished. For it was his company Loopline Films that recorded Jimmy’s experiences and the residual anger resulting from his and his family’s internment in an American prison camp during the second world war.
What promises to be a seminal event in the history of the animation industry in Ireland will close with a visual treat. In 1967 the American Film Institute was founded by the Endowment for the Arts and Humanities. Gregory Peck a grandson of Dingle was one of the initial trustees. The first film the AFI funded in 1968 was ‘The Good Friends’ a ten-minute animation. Fittingly this piece will close out Animation Dingle 2013.

The Dark Room by Rachel Sheiffert was shortlisted for The Booker Prize and is now a new feature film by Cate Shortland(Somersault), entitled LORE, pictured above. “Few films recently have affected me as powerfully as Lore.
Dreamtime Revisited, pictured above, a new film by Dónal Ó Céilleachair and Julius Ziz is a “walkabout in dreamtime Ireland” inspired by the works of Irish writer, poet and philosopher, John Moriarty considered by many “as a major writer, comparable to Yeats, Joyce and Beckett” (Guardian Obituary 2007). John’s father came from Dingle.
‘A piece of truly original cinema! Not just food for thought but a feast for thought!’
Poet Paul Durcan
‘A magical, hallucinatory feast of wonders. I emerged from the cinema spellbound
and soul-bathed’
Mike Scott (The Waterboys)

Dingle International Film Festival wants your experience on film!

Fungi was first spotted in Dingle Bay in 1983. Since then he has captured the imagination of so many. Each day boat loads of people travel out to catch a glimse of this wonderful creature who somehow eminates joy to all who experience him.

In 2013, Dingle IFF wish to celebrate 30 years of Fungi with a worldwide call seeking people’s own personal experiences of seeing the dolphin. Perhaps you were on a boat trip or swimming with Fungi in the water; the festival are asking people in Ireland and all over the world to record their experience of Fungi and share it with us.

This is a unique call for a Gathering Event as it takes in so many aspects of humanity – the dolphin has given so many people a rainbow of experiences which range from humorous to spiritual. It is these unique experiences of joy and happiness that Dingle IFF want to share and celebrate for Fungi’s 30 years in the Bay.

So, simply sit in front of your computer and record; or have mum or dad or a friend capture you talk about when you met Fungi. Archive footage is also welcome. When you have your film captured, simply upload it to Vimeo or Youtube and email us the link to fungi@dinglefilmfestival.com. People can also include a short story of their experience, just 150 words or less in their email. By sending us the link of your film you are giving the festival full permission to use your film footage in our own promotion of this event.

The festival plans to put together a film compilation of the entries and this will be premiered at the next Dingle International Film Festival in St. James’ Church on St. Patrick’s morning 2013. The DVD of the film will also be available for sale during the festival. The full rights to the film will remain with Dingle International Film Festival.

Celebrating Fungi at the film festival The festival will also have a retrospective screening of ‘A Dolphin’s Gift’ which was produced by Victoria Cotton who now lives in Dingle as a result of making the film back in 1985. The film was directed by Kim Kindersley and narrated by John Hurt.

There will also be a Fungi festival at the end of April in Dingle, check local news for details.
