Dingle International Film Festival (Dingle IFF), in association with StudioCanal and Element Pictures, is proud to announce that FREE FIRE, a stylish new film by British director Ben Wheatley that features an all-star cast, will open the festival on March 23rd 2017 at the Phoenix Cinema.
Set in Boston in 1978, an arms deal in a deserted warehouse goes spectacularly and explosively wrong. When a disagreement between two gangs leads to shots fired, complete pandemonium ensues, with everyone at the scene suddenly thrust into a heart-stopping game of survival.
FREE FIRE boasts a fantastic and highly recognizable cast, who all deliver authentic performances to portray devious and darkly hilarious characters:
Cillian Murphy, star of the Irish classic, THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE BARLEY (2006), the hugely popular DARK KNIGHT TRILOGY (2005-2012), and is the lead role in the critically lauded BBC drama, PEAKY BLINDERS (2013—)
Brie Larson, whose brilliant performance as a kidnapped mother in the Canadian-Irish independent film ROOM (2015) earned her the Academy Award for ‘Best Actress in a Leading Role’.
Armie Hammer, who earned widespread audience attention from his roles in the Clint Eastwood directed hit, J. EDGAR (2011), THE LONE RANGER (2013), and THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. (2015).
Sharlto Copley, who delivered mesmerizing performances in the Oscar-nominated DISTRICT 9 (2009), the 2010 remake of THE A-TEAM, and ELYSIUM (2013).
Michael Smiley, a frequent collaborator with director Ben Wheatley, and was nominated for ‘Best Supporting Actor’ at the 2011 British Independent Film Awards for his role in Wheatley’s KILL LIST (2011).
Jack Reynor, rising Irish star from SING STREET (2016), THE SECRET SCRIPTURE (2016), MACBETH (2015), and WHAT RICHARD DID (2012).
Other cast members include Sam Riley, Enzo Cilenti, and Noah Taylor.
This lively and diverse talent was attracted to FREE FIRE because of the reputation of Ben Wheatley, a director with unique visual flair and an uncompromising sense of humour. From humble beginnings as an animation creator online, his carefully edited YouTube video, CUNNING STUNT, hit over 10 million views and catapulted him into viral fame. His subsequent creativity in advertising gave him enough credibility to hit the big screen. in His first feature film, DOWN TERRACE (2009) was impressively shot in only eight days, and put Wheatley on the radar of many top film producers. His next film KILL LIST (2011), an intense crime thriller, cemented his position as one of the most innovative new directors in British cinema. His other directorial credits include 14 episodes of the British comedy series IDEAL (2005-2011); SIGHTSEERS (2012), which earned him a ‘Best Director’ nomination at the British Independent Film Awards; and two episodes of DOCTOR WHO (2014), starring Peter Capaldi. With seven feature films in six years, Wheatley is going from strength to strength in the film industry. His latest film, FREE FIRE, promises to be the biggest and most audacious of his career.
FREE FIRE is a change of tone from Ben Wheatley’s other feature films, and he is excited about mixing his trademark thrills with a lot of sharply funny interactions—“I wanted to go back to making a movie that was more fun, and had a lot of comedy in it, and was dynamic and had a lot of action, so that’s what I was thinking [with FREE FIRE].”
