Born on May 16 1955, Páidí O Sé went on to become an icon of all things Gaelic Football, all things Kerry. All things West Kerry.

Throughout his career he amassed 11 Munster Final wins, 8 All Irelands and 4 National Leagues. He was named an All Star on 5 occasions. A true all-star.

But his prowess on the pitch was matched with enthusiasm off it. His grá for the Irish language and heritage was legendary. A trip “back west” was not complete without a visit to Páidí’s, to walk in the footsteps of celebrities he had wooed over the years. He was particularly admired by a former guest of the festival, Sarah Miles of Ryan’s Daughters’ fame.

On December 15, 2012, Kerry, and the world, was rocked by his sudden passing.

“Ta an Rí caillte” was how the news was broken to his many friends. Indeed the King had gone from us.

But what he left behind was fond memories of a sports man, an Irish man and, above all, a family man. A passion for all things Irish and Kerry. A passion for life.

There are two Kingdoms – The Kingdom of God and the Kingdom of Kerry.
Páidí is a king in both.
Ar Deis Dé a anam.

Saolaíodh Páidí Ó Sé ar an 16 Bealtaine 1955. Bhain sé cáil amach mar íomhá do gach a bhain le peil Ghaelach, gach a bhain le Ciarraí agus go háirithe gach a bhain le Ciarraí Thiar.

I rith a shaoil caide bhuaigh sé 11 Cluiche Ceannais na Mumhan, 8 gCluiche Ceannais na hÉireann agus 4 Sraith Náisiúnta. Ainmníodh é 5 bhabhta mar Sár Imreoir Peile na Bliana. Laoch amach is amach ab ea é.

Lean an chrógacht a léirigh sé ar an ngort isteach ina shaol pearsanta. Bhí fhios ag an saol an grá a bhí aige don Ghaeilge agus dá oidhreacht. Ní bhíodh aon turas ‘siar go Chorca Dhuibhne’ críochnaithe i gceart gan sciuird a thabhairt ar thábhairne Pháidí Uí Shé faoi mar a dhein daoine mór le rá a raibh aithne aige orthu. Bhí Sarah Miles, an t-aisteoir clúiteach i ‘Ryan’s Daughter’ mar aoi speisialta ag an bhFéile cúpla bliain ó shin agus bhí ard mheas aici ar Pháidí.

Ar 15 Nollaig 2012 baineadh geit as mhuintir Chiarraí agus as an domhain nuair a cailleadh é go tobann.

“Tá an Rí caillte” – sin é an tslí a cuireadh in iúl dá chairde go raibh sé imithe. Sea, go deimhin tá an Rí imithe uainn.

Ach d’fhág sé cuimhní iontacha againn d’fhear spóirt, Gael agus thar aon ní eile, fear clainne. Bhí paisean aige do gach rud gaelach agus do Chiarraí. Paisean don saol.

Tá dhá ríocht ann – Ríocht Dé agus Ríocht Chiarraí. Tá Páidí mar Rí ar an dá cheann.
Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.
